Newark Environmental Commission

About the Commission

Mayor Cory A. Booker, Council President Donald M. Payne, Jr., and other Newark dignitaries swore in members of the City’s new Environmental Commission during a Municipal Council Chamber ceremony on March 20th 2009, launching Newark’s first such body, with a mission to support Newark’s efforts to protect and promote its natural resources and become the “greenest” city in the Garden State.

The Commission is charged with protecting and promoting Newark’s environment.  The Commission makes recommendations, oversees environmental policies and practices, and advises the Mayor and Council on environmental issues. The Commission addresses environmental education, air pollution, brownfields, solid waste, environmental and public health and the conservation and protection of natural resources.
