The meeting was held to discuss issues surrounding safety during local businesses operating hours, fighting crime, and steps that can be taken to expedite municipal licenses for selling food items—some of which have taken as long as six months.

“We are urging residents during this bad winter weather to stay off the roads. If you must drive don't go out until the snow plows and sanding trucks have had a chance to do their work, and allow yourself extra time to reach your destination. Newark Mayor Cory A. Booker and Police Director Garry F. McCarthy today announced the launch of a Pedestrian Safety Campaign aimed at improving pedestrian and motorist safety. The three-pronged initiative funded by a $25,000 grant from the New Jersey Division of Highway and Traffic Safety is a 29-week program, set to run January through September. According to statistics from the Division of Highway and Traffic Safety, New Jersey has a disproportionate number of pedestrian injuries due to accidents involving motor vehicles. Studies also show children and seniors are at a higher risk of being struck by a motor vehicles.

All non-emergency Newark municipal services will be closed on Monday, January 18. There will be no street-sweeping nor collection of recyclables on that day.
Residents must place their refuse at their curbs before 6 a.m. on that day (as on other trash pick-up days) to ensure that sanitation workers will remove it. However, residents are reminded not to put their trash out for collection on Monday, January 18. Doing so may result in a fine, as Monday, January 18, is not a collection day.

Vizcarrondo reminded Newark residents today that residents who own dogs must purchase or renew licenses for them, and that applications for licenses are available in Room B-17, at City Hall, Mondays through Fridays, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Applicants for dog licenses must present the dog or dogs’ certificates of vaccination when they apply for the license. The fee for dog licenses is $11.20. Last year, the City issued 799 dog licenses.

Mayor Cory A. Booker and Fire Director David Giordano reminded Newark residents today that during this holiday season they should take fire safety precautions to ensure that family celebrations do not turn into tragedies.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, the nation’s fire departments responded to an average of 250 home structure fires that began with Christmas trees between 2003 and 2007. These fires caused an annual average of 14 civilian fire deaths, 26 civilian fire injuries, and $13.8 million in property damage.
