The report, prepared by the ACNJ, is a comprehensive statistical assessment of the issues facing Newark’s youth. It underscores the challenging times Newark’s children face, and families’ growing reliance on the State to meet basic needs. After several years of declining child poverty in Newark, the rate has risen to 35 percent - one in three children, as compared to the state rate of 12 percent. Newark’s unemployment rate is currently 14 percent which is almost double the State’s unemployment rate. Currently 52 percent of households in Newark are spending more than the recommended 30 percent of income on rent, a figure higher than the state average. Three-quarters of all households in Newark rent rather than own their homes.

Waldrop announced today that the City of Newark will host the Inaugural iHoops Skills Challenge to Newark youth ages 9 through 14. Friday, January 1, 2010, the City of Newark is launching a 30-day warning period to test its “Project Red Light” Automated Photo Enforcement System at two new intersections. This is part of a new initiative to reduce the number of traffic accidents caused by motorists who ignore red lights. Newark is the first municipality in the State to implement this program.
Beginning Friday, January 1, 2010, and ending Sunday, January 31, 2010, warning letters will be issued to all motorists who run through red lights at two additional intersections selected for the program: Raymond Boulevard and Raymond Plaza West and Broad and Murray Streets. The automated photo enforcement system will be officially activated on Friday, February 1, 2010, when all motorists running right lights at those intersections will be issued an $85 traffic violation.

Gonzalez, Sustainability Officer Chelsea Albucher, representatives from Newark-based Weston Solutions, Inc. and Wilson Avenue Realty Company executives inspected the installation of solar panels on the roof of the Engineering Department’s motor vehicle garage at 233-249 Wilson Avenue in Newark’s East Ward yesterday.
The City is the sole tenant under a long-term lease for the garage from Victor Santos, and his East Ward-based Wilson Avenue Realty Company. Wilson Avenue Realty and Weston Solutions, Inc. partnered to install a $1.3 million 200-Kilowatt system of 806 photo-voltaic panels on the 55,472-square-foot motors building, which will provide 83 percent of the building’s power when complete in January 2010. Each panel is 5-feet-by-4-inches long and 3-feet-by-3-inches wide, resulting in a total system panel area of nearly 14,000 square feet.

Continuing through May 1, 2010, tenants in unheated apartments can make complaints directly to the City of Newark’s “No Heat Hotline” at (973) 733-6471.
By law, landlords are required to provide their tenants in the City of Newark with a minimal temperature of 68 degrees between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m., and 65 degrees from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., from October 1, 2009, through May 1, 2009.
