The “South Ward Powerhouse” is a transportable house which showcases how everyone can incorporate green living into their daily lives. The house is a 30’ X 18’ X 12’ structure that features a kitchen, living room, dining room, utility room and bathroom, and holds 20-30 visitors at a time. Residents and other visitors to the house will be able to walk through the various rooms and see a visual display of invaluable energy saving tips and the appliances and other items that can make homes more energy efficient, environmentally friendly and most importantly, help save money.
June 28, 2010 - Councilman Ramos Awards $1000 Scholarships to 16 Deserving Newark Students
With faces full of happiness and hope, 16 well-deserving students from Newark’s North Ward were rewarded for their hard work with a scholarship check from the North Ward Scholarship Fund. The checks were presented by Councilman Anibal Ramos Jr. in a ceremony at Newark’s City Hall last week, and attended by the students, their parents and teachers, and other members of the Newark Municipal Council.
March 1, 2010 - Councilman Quintana Raises Flag at City Hall in Honor of Dominican Republic Independence
Councilman Vice President and Councilman-At-Large Luis A. Quintana congratulated Dominicans around the State of New Jersey and particularly those in the City of Newark on the 166th Anniversary of the Dominican Republic’s Independence Day with a flag raising ceremony at Newark City Hall this past weekend. Councilman Quintana was joined by Newark Mayor Cory A. Booker, and Council members Carlos Gonzalez, Anibal Ramos and Ron Rice.
August 27, 2009 - Crump Joins Tate George for NASDAQ Closing Ceremony
Newark Municipal Council President Mildred C. Crump joined Newark native and former NBA player Tate George to ring the NASDAQ closing bell at a ceremony this afternoon. George is President, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors of The George Group LLC, a real estate development company that is involved in several high-profile projects throughout the City of Newark. The George Group was invited to host the ceremony in honor of their affiliation with the NBA Legends Foundation, Hole In The Wall Gang, Developing Minds and Vision of Hope charities.
Newark officials joined nonprofit groups to launch a “green” jobs initiative designed to boost to the city’s economy by providing environmentally friendly job opportunities to members of Saving Our Selves (S.O.S.), a local nonprofit gang intervention and prevention organization that helps gang members and those at risk acquire valuable trade skills.
The City of Newark, Department of Economic and Housing Development, Division of Housing and Real Estate is seeking proposals from qualified proposers to develop parcels of vacant land and several structures in accordance with the City of Newark's Land Disposition Policy.

“We are bidding farewell to one of the most dedicated and hard-working members of the Newark municipal team,” Mayor Booker said. “During her time with us, Desiree restructured the City’s Public Information Office to be more responsive, effective and innovative. Her creativity and commitment to redefine how municipal government communicates to better inform residents has been invaluable. I wish her all the best as she continues her public service career in the Nutter Administration,” said Mayor Booker.
Wilson Avenue’s intersections with Lafayette Street and Houston Streets in the Ironbound’s residential area, and that with Avenue L, in the neighborhood’s industrial zone. Plans call for the installation of new traffic signal systems, LED warning signs, curbing, sidewalks, paving, striping, and crosswalks at the sites, with construction beginning in 2011.
“Our city exists because of its river,” said Mayor Booker. “It is the reason that people came to this place: Native Americans, European Puritans, American Industrialists, and the Great Migration of African-Americans. But for too long Newarkers have been alienated and blocked off from their riverfront. My administration is dedicated to bringing Newark and Newarkers back to the water.”
The City of Newark, The Kresge Foundation and the Newark Partnership for Lead Safe Children held a ribbon-cutting ceremony today to celebrate the opening of the city’s first “lead safe house” in the West Ward. An increased demand for relocation resources and lead safe housing prompted Mayor Booker to seek funding to increase lead safe housing opportunities across all ofNewark’s neighborhoods. In addition to the new West Ward lead safe house, the city has two houses with a total of seven units, located in the South Ward, designated as lead safe homes where families relocate during remediation of lead at their homes.
Mayor Cory A. Booker, Deputy Mayor of Economic and Housing Development Stefan Pryor, Newark Workforce Investment Board Executive Director Nelida Valentin, and Youth One Stop Career Center Assistant Director Terrance L. Bankston announced today that more than 1,500 Newark high school-age youth, ages ranging from 14 to 21, are spending the summer learning valuable workplace lessons through the City’s paid Newark summer youth employment program which runs from Tuesday, July 12 through Friday, August 19, 2010.

Watson, Acting Engineering Director Mehdi Mohammadish, community residents, and other dignitaries began the demolition of the abandoned Douglass-Harrison Building Complex with a 9 a.m. ceremony on Montgomery Street between Barclay and Somerset Streets, today. Rutgers University Distinguished Service Professor and Newark historian Dr. Clement A. Price served as master of ceremonies. Also in attendance were State Senator Teresa Ruiz, Essex County Register Philip Thigpen, Deputy Mayor of Economic and Housing Development Stefan Pryor, City of Newark Chief Architect Robert Dooley and City of Newark Inspector General James Wright.
