The “South Ward Powerhouse” is a transportable house which showcases how everyone can incorporate green living into their daily lives. The house is a 30’ X 18’ X 12’ structure that features a kitchen, living room, dining room, utility room and bathroom, and holds 20-30 visitors at a time. Residents and other visitors to the house will be able to walk through the various rooms and see a visual display of invaluable energy saving tips and the appliances and other items that can make homes more energy efficient, environmentally friendly and most importantly, help save money.
Promising to work with the City administration, and to collaborate with residents on the issues currently facing the City, Councilman-At-Large Donald M. Payne, Jr. was elected to serve as the president of the Newark Municipal Council by a majority vote of his Council colleagues. The new Council President was elected immediately following the inauguration ceremony for Mayor Cory A. Booker’s second term and the rest of the Municipal Council. North Ward Councilman Anibal Ramos Jr. was elected Vice President of the nine-member body.
The Brick City Scholarship Fund - thanks to the generosity of One Newark Center, the City of Newark and Municipal Council - is accepting applications from Newark high school seniors graduating June, 2010. The two recipients will each be awarded $20,000 in four $5000 installments, one for each academic year, to be used toward college tuition, books and transportation.
March 1, 2010 - Councilman Quintana Raises Flag at City Hall in Honor of Dominican Republic Independence
Councilman Vice President and Councilman-At-Large Luis A. Quintana congratulated Dominicans around the State of New Jersey and particularly those in the City of Newark on the 166th Anniversary of the Dominican Republic’s Independence Day with a flag raising ceremony at Newark City Hall this past weekend. Councilman Quintana was joined by Newark Mayor Cory A. Booker, and Council members Carlos Gonzalez, Anibal Ramos and Ron Rice.
February 8, 2010 - Councilman Rice Hosts After Work Mixer to Benefit "The Street Warriors"
The Street Warriors—founded in 2003 by Newark’s own Earl “Street Doctor” Best—is well-known throughout the City for their efforts to provide Newark’s youth with numerous violence prevention programs that aid in creating safer neighborhoods while also helping youth to lead successful lives. Despite the notoriety of Street Warrior Inc., the organization will lose its lease in just 30 days unless it raises money for its lease payment by Feb. 15. In addition, the organization needs to raise $300,000 for the remainder of the year for rent and operational costs. The organization is in critical needs since its primary source of funding, the Nicholson Foundation, is unable to renew their grant in 2010.
November 16, 2009 - Councilman Rice Addresses Lack of Response by Newark Police
West Ward Councilman Ronald C. Rice, in an effort to respond to numerous requests from the community about public safety, today announced the formation of the West Ward Crime and Safety Committee, a new committee whose purpose is to seek resolution from the Newark Police Department regarding specific public safety issues in the West Ward. Of particular concern is the change in the patrol schedule in the area surrounding Mt. VernonSchool—site of the brutal slaying of three of Newark’s promising young college students. Councilman Rice was joined at the announcement by Essex County Freeholder Rufus Johnson.
October 29, 2009 Council Hosts Children's Events for Halloween
In an effort to provide a safe outlet for Halloween fun, various members of the Newark Municipal Council are hosting events to allow Newark residents to enjoy the Halloween celebration with their neighbors and friends in the different Newark communities. The members of the Council collaborate on many events, especially during this time, to offer an alternative to some of the traditional “mischief” that young people will sometimes take part in. The events will be held in a number of areas throughout the City.
October 27, 2009 - NJ Devils Game Tickets for Newark Students
Council President Mildred C. Crump today announced that she will be attending tomorrow’s New Jersey Devils home game at the Prudential Center Arena with 50 special guests—students from Newark Tech High School, beneficiaries of a generous donation made possible by the Tommy Hilfiger Corporate Foundation. In addition to watching an exciting NHL game, the students will be a part of the game dedicated to raising funds for UNICEF, the world’s largest organization dedicated to the reduction of child mortality.
Honoring Newark’s seniors and truly making them feel like “Queens” for the day, Newark Municipal Council Vice President and Council Member-At-Large Luis A. Quintana will host the Sixth Annual “Queen of the Golden Age” celebration. The event is a precursor event for Newark’s annual Puerto Rican Day Parade.
The event will feature music and dancing, as well as the official “crowning” of the Queens who are representatives from senior centers around the City. The Queens will also ride on a float representing all Newark’s seniors at the Puerto Rican Day Parade on Sunday, September 20.
September 11, 2009 - Quintana Hosts Cookout for Homeless
Truly embodying the spirit of Labor Day, Council-Member-At-Large Luis A. Quintana organized a mass effort to celebrate the Labor Day holiday earlier this week with residents of the Goodwill Rescue Mission in Newark. Joined by his Newark Municipal Council colleagues Council President Mildred C. Crump, Council Member-At-Large Donald M. Payne, North Ward Councilman Anibal Ramos Jr., and Council Member-At-Large Carlos M. Gonzalez, Quintana was able to provide a day of fun and food for the approximately 200 residents at the shelter. The Goodwill Rescue Mission is experiencing serious financial difficulty and had planned to cancel the annual Labor Day event before Councilman Quintana stepped in to help.
September 13, 2009 - Councilman Ramos Hosts End of Summer Festival
With the summer season quickly coming to an end, North Ward Councilman Anibal Ramos Jr. is celebrating in style. The North Ward End of Summer festival promises to have something for everyone, with crafts, entertainment and games for kids, and music and dancing for adults. New this year is the “Kings and Queens of Karaoke” segment, featuring some of New Jersey’s best karaoke singers. Also, mambo and salsa dance lessons will culminate in a showcase of the best dance students.
But the highlight of the event is the giveaway to North Ward students of 500 book bags filled with school supplies necessary for a successful school year.
August 27, 2009 - Quintana Partners with Newark Bears to Recognize Roberto Clemente
On Sunday August 30, 2009, Newark Councilman-At-Large Luis A. Quintana will join the Newark Bears to host Roberto Clemente Day at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium to honor the life and legacy of Roberto Clemente and to help raise awareness and support for Pancreatic Cancer research. Elected officials from across the State of New Jersey, community activists, baseball legends, Clemente’s two sons and former teammates will gather at Riverfront Stadium to retire Roberto Clemente’s #21 jersey. The Newark Bears will be the first professional minor league baseball team to petition major league teams to honor Roberto Clemente by retiring his jersey number.
August 11, 2009 - Councilman Quintana Hosts City Dedication of Future Site of Statue
Newark Municipal Council Vice President and Councilman-At-Large Luis A. Quintana joined Mayor Cory A. Booker earlier this afternoon to officially dedicate the future site of a statue of Juan Pablo Duarte, considered the “Founding Father” of the Dominican Republic. The site—which will be home to only the second statue to be erected in the United States in honor of Duarte—was dedicated at a ceremony earlier today in Newark’s Washington Park. Councilman Quintana was also joined by his colleagues on the Newark Municipal Council, and representatives from the Instituto Duartiano de Newark Inc.
July 20, 2009 - Crump Hosts Career Empowerment Tour
Council President Mildred Crump is doing everything in her power to transform and kick start careers through education. The Empowerment Tour, which is part of the Career Stimulus Package by eLearners.com, came to Newark City Hall today with the goal of helping adult Americans overcome the barriers of time, money, and confidence in attaining a college degree. Council President Crump was joined by Mayor Cory Booker in welcoming the tour to Newark .
June 22, 2009 - Crump Hosts "Senior Day on the Hill" Trip to D.C.
Well-known for her advocacy on behalf of Newark senior residents, Council President Mildred C. Crump hosted more than fifty of Newark’s seniors at her 2nd annual “Day on the Hill” trip to Washington, D.C. on June 18. The group was hosted by Congressman Donald M. Payne, Representative of the 10th Congressional District, and his staff.
May 28, 2009 - Councilman Rice Host Essex Count Municipal Council Alliance
In an effort to promote the sharing of ideas and best practices among the 22 municipalities in Essex County, Newark West Ward Councilman Ronald C. Rice, together with West Orange Councilman Sal M. Anderton will host the inaugural meeting of the Essex County Municipal Council Alliance. The meeting is being held on Thursday, May 28 at 6:30 p.m. in the Municipal Council Chamber, Newark City Hall, 920 Broad Street, Newark.
Newark Municipal Council Member Donald M. Payne Jr. will join the Globetrotters’ opposing team, the Washington Generals, on game day. The Globetrotters, sponsored by Campbell Soup Company, IHOP, Spalding, and America’s Best Contacts and Eyeglasses, will take the court on Saturday, February 14, 2009 at 7:00 p.m.
On Tuesday, January 6, 2009, Newark Councilman Luis A. Quintana will host the 15th Annual Feast of the Three Kings Celebration at the Essex County College gymnasium from 4 to 7 p.m. Councilman Quintana hosts the celebration to honor the European tradition of Three Kings Day, a Christmas festival held in most of the Spanish-speaking countries where children are given toys and goodies for the holiday. Children attending the celebration will enjoy caroling, clowns, acrobats, magicians, toys and treats and goodies. Additionally, scholarships will be awarded to two children who are in need of financial assistance and resources.
"Our aim in celebrating the feast of the Three Kings is simple—to give joy to children most in need of love and hope," said Councilman Quintana in announcing the annual event.

May 20 - City of Newark Reminds Residents: Garbage and Recycling Will Not Be Picked up Monday, May 30
Mayor Cory A. Booker and Director of Neighborhood and Recreational Services James Souder announced today that no garbage, including recycling, will be collected by the Division of Sanitation on Monday, May 30. Other non-emergency municipal services will also be closed that day in observance of the Memorial Day holiday.
Mayor Cory A. Booker, Members of the Municipal Council, Acting Police Director Samuel A. DeMaio and other dignitaries saluted the valor of Newark Police Officers who have distinguished themselves in the line of duty by presenting awards for bravery and merit during a Municipal Council Chamber ceremony today. The ceremony is part of the City of Newark’s observance of National Police Week, which was originally created by federal legislation and signed into law by President John F. Kennedy in 1961, as National Peace Officer Day. Since then, the week of May 15 is observed each year to honor all law enforcement officers.

Mayor Cory A. Booker and Engineering Director Mehdi Mohammadish announced today that the City of Newark will launch a massive streetscaping project on Broad Street, between Edison Place and Franklin Street, starting on Monday, May 2, 2011 through the end of the year. Work hours will be Mondays to Fridays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Motorists should allow extra time to reach their destinations.

The City of Newark, the Newark Municipal Council, Director of Neighborhood and Recreational Services James Souder, City of Newark Acting Sustainability Officer Stephanie Greenwood and the Newark Environmental Commission, and students of the Torchlight Academy kicked off city-wide Earth Week 2011 cleanup efforts today, at 195 Central Avenue, in the Central Ward. The week runs from April 27 to April 30.
April 27 - Senator Lautenberg, Congressman Payne, And City of Newark Announce $7Million Grant to Hire 70 New Firefighters
U.S. Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Rep. Donald M. Payne (D-NJ-10) were joined by Council President Donald M. Payne, Jr., Business Administrator Julien X. Neals, Esq., Fire Director Fateen A. Ziyad, Fire Chief John G. Centanni, and Newark firefighters today to announce the Newark Fire Department was awarded $7.1 million in federal funding to hire 70 new firefighters. The funding is being made available through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program and will be used to fill vacancies left by recently retired Newark firefighters. The press conference was held at the Newark Fire Department Training Academy, at 191 Orange Street, in Newark’s Central Ward.
April 25 - Newark Fire Department Hosts Four-Day North Jersey Traning Exercise
Mayor Cory A. Booker, Fire Director Fateen A. Ziyad, and Fire Chief John Centanni announced today that the Newark Fire Department is hosting the four-day Metro USAR Strike Team drill at the Newark Fire Academy at 191 Orange Street. The drill is taking place starting on Monday, April 25 through Thursday, April 28, 2011. The firefighters and police officers will conduct exercises at the training area daily from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., although times are subject to change. On Wednesday, April 27, at 11 a.m., Director Ziyad and Chief Centanni will hold a walk-through of the exercise, joined by members of the Essex County Fire Chiefs Association.

April 20 - Mayor Booker Reminds Residents: City Hall Will Be Closed on Friday, April 22 Due to Good Friday Observance
Mayor Cory A. Booker and Department of Neighborhood and Recreational Services Director James Souder reminded residents today that City Hall will be closed on Friday, April 22, in observance of Good Friday. Most non-emergency municipal services will be closed that day. Garbage and recycling pick up will resume as scheduled on the next normal collection day and street-sweeping will be postponed.
April 20 -Mayor Booker, Lt. Governor Guadagno and Panasonic Announce Lease Agreement to Move Panasonic Corp. of North America Headquarters to Newark, NJ
Mayor Cory A. Booker, Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno, Panasonic Corporation of North America Chairman & CEO Joseph M. Taylor, Deputy Mayor for Economic and Housing Development Stefan Pryor, Members of the Newark Municipal Council and other dignitaries announced today that a lease agreement will bring Panasonic Corporation of North America Headquarters to Newark, NJ in 2013 to a new, state-of-the-art, sustainable high-rise office building to be constructed adjacent to Newark’s One Riverfront Center. The structure will be home to 1,000 of the corporation’s employees and contractors beginning in 2013. Panasonic is currently located in Secaucus, New Jersey.

Mayor Cory A. Booker and Tucker Development Corporation today hosted a groundbreaking for the Courtyard by Marriott at the Prudential Center, a mixed-use hotel and retail project that will be a significant catalyst to Newark’s economic growth, bringing new investment, ratables and employment to the Brick City. The groundbreaking was held in collaboration with the Prudential Center, Marriott International, Robert Finvarb Companies, the NJ Economic Development Authority, and Brick City Development Corporation, who partnered with the Tucker organization to produce the project. Elected dignitaries present at the groundbreaking included State Senator Teresa Ruiz, State Assemblyman Alberto Coutinho, Municipal Council President Donald M. Payne, Jr., Council Members-at-Large Mildred C. Crump, Carlos M. Gonzalez, Luis A. Quintana, Central Ward Council Member Darrin S. Sharif, and East Ward Council Member Augusto Amador.
March 29 - Newark to Host 4th Annual Alcohol License Renewal Program
Mayor Cory A. Booker and Police Director Garry F. McCarthy announced today that the City of Newark will host the Fourth Annual Alcohol License Renewal Program on Tuesday, April 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m, in the J. Harry Smith Hall at Essex County College located at 303 University Avenue.
The Office of Alcoholic Beverage Control has conducted these programs every year since 2007, to explain to tavern and liquor store owners all the legal requirements they must meet in order to operate safely and efficiently within the City of Newark.

Mayor Cory A. Booker and Department of Neighborhood and Recreational Services Director James Souder announced today the Division of Recreation/Cultural Affairs’ schedule of programs and events for Spring 2011.
“This Spring we are rolling out a variety of activities for Newark residents of all ages. These programs will help to support the goal of our city-wide Let’s Move! Newark campaign. Mayor Cory A. Booker and Newark Municipal Court Chief Judge Richard E.A. Nunes announced today that the Newark Municipal Court is scheduled to conduct 55 wedding and civil union ceremonies on Monday, February 14, from Noon to 3 p.m., in the Newark Municipal Court, at 31 Green Street, in celebration of Valentine’s Day. Couples being united will receive souvenir photographs to mark their special day.
