June 28, 2010 - Councilman Ramos Awards $1000 Scholarships to 16 Deserving Newark Students
With faces full of happiness and hope, 16 well-deserving students from Newark’s North Ward were rewarded for their hard work with a scholarship check from the North Ward Scholarship Fund. The checks were presented by Councilman Anibal Ramos Jr. in a ceremony at Newark’s City Hall last week, and attended by the students, their parents and teachers, and other members of the Newark Municipal Council.
The Brick City Scholarship Fund - thanks to the generosity of One Newark Center, the City of Newark and Municipal Council - is accepting applications from Newark high school seniors graduating June, 2010. The two recipients will each be awarded $20,000 in four $5000 installments, one for each academic year, to be used toward college tuition, books and transportation.
June 25, 2009 - Councilman Amador Recognizes Nearly 300 of Newark's Best Students
Earlier this week, Newark Councilman Augusto Amador continued his tradition of presenting the “Best of the Best” Award to nearly 300 students from public and private schools in the East Ward. The annual event was held at the Mediterranean Manor in the Ironbound, and attended by both the award recipients and their parents and teachers.

Newark, and the Newark Public Schools, hosted the first annual Let’s Move! Newark Day as part of the Newark Bears’ Opening Day festivities, today, at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The stadium is located at 450 Broad Street.
May 25 - City of Newark Seeking Instructors to Teach Water Safety
Mayor Cory A. Booker and Neighborhood and Recreational Services Director James Souder announced today that the City of Newark is training water safety instructors and lifeguards to work with the “Make A Splash” Water Safety program, a partnership with the USA Swimming Foundation to teach urban youth the essentials of water and pool safety.
May 25 - City of Newark, Gi Go Fund and Newark Veterans To Observe Memorial Day With Memorial Ceremony
Mayor Cory A. Booker and Neighborhood and Recreational Services Director James Souder announced today that the City of Newark is offering a “CPR Re-Certification class for the Professional Rescuer” on Saturday, June 4, 2011, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Saturday, June 16, 2011, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., at the Ironbound Aquatic Center located at 226 Rome Street. This class is only open to Newark residents aged 16 years and older.

Mayor Cory A. Booker and Engineering Director Mehdi Mohammadish announced today that the City of Newark will launch a massive streetscaping project on Broad Street, between Edison Place and Franklin Street, starting on Monday, May 2, 2011 through the end of the year. Work hours will be Mondays to Fridays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Motorists should allow extra time to reach their destinations.

April 27 - City of Newark and Students of Torchlight Academy Kick Off City Wide Earth Week 2011 Cleanup
The City of Newark, the Newark Municipal Council, Director of Neighborhood and Recreational Services James Souder, City of Newark Acting Sustainability Officer Stephanie Greenwood and the Newark Environmental Commission, and students of the Torchlight Academy kicked off city-wide Earth Week 2011 cleanup efforts today, at 195 Central Avenue, in the Central Ward. The week runs from April 27 to April 30.
April 27 - Senator Lautenberg, Congressman Payne, And City of Newark Announce $7Million Grant to Hire 70 New Firefighters
U.S. Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Rep. Donald M. Payne (D-NJ-10) were joined by Council President Donald M. Payne, Jr., Business Administrator Julien X. Neals, Esq., Fire Director Fateen A. Ziyad, Fire Chief John G. Centanni, and Newark firefighters today to announce the Newark Fire Department was awarded $7.1 million in federal funding to hire 70 new firefighters. The funding is being made available through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program and will be used to fill vacancies left by recently retired Newark firefighters. The press conference was held at the Newark Fire Department Training Academy, at 191 Orange Street, in Newark’s Central Ward.
April 25 - Newark Fire Department Hosts Four-Day North Jersey Traning Exercise
Mayor Cory A. Booker, Fire Director Fateen A. Ziyad, and Fire Chief John Centanni announced today that the Newark Fire Department is hosting the four-day Metro USAR Strike Team drill at the Newark Fire Academy at 191 Orange Street. The drill is taking place starting on Monday, April 25 through Thursday, April 28, 2011. The firefighters and police officers will conduct exercises at the training area daily from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., although times are subject to change. On Wednesday, April 27, at 11 a.m., Director Ziyad and Chief Centanni will hold a walk-through of the exercise, joined by members of the Essex County Fire Chiefs Association.
April 20 - Mayor Booker Reminds Residents: City Hall Will Be Closed on Friday, April 22 Due to Good Friday Observance
Mayor Cory A. Booker and Department of Neighborhood and Recreational Services Director James Souder reminded residents today that City Hall will be closed on Friday, April 22, in observance of Good Friday. Most non-emergency municipal services will be closed that day. Garbage and recycling pick up will resume as scheduled on the next normal collection day and street-sweeping will be postponed.
Mayor Cory A. Booker and Department of Neighborhood and Recreational Services Director James Souder announced today the Division of Recreation/Cultural Affairs’ schedule of programs and events for Spring 2011.
“This Spring we are rolling out a variety of activities for Newark residents of all ages. These programs will help to support the goal of our city-wide Let’s Move! Newark campaign. I urge all of Newark’s residents to get involved and take advantage of the resources offered at our recreation centers and lead a healthier lifestyle,” said Mayor Booker, who is serving as National Co-Chair of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! campaign to end childhood obesity within a generation.
