The report, prepared by the ACNJ, is a comprehensive statistical assessment of the issues facing Newark’s youth. It underscores the challenging times Newark’s children face, and families’ growing reliance on the State to meet basic needs. After several years of declining child poverty in Newark, the rate has risen to 35 percent - one in three children, as compared to the state rate of 12 percent. Newark’s unemployment rate is currently 14 percent which is almost double the State’s unemployment rate. Currently 52 percent of households in Newark are spending more than the recommended 30 percent of income on rent, a figure higher than the state average. Three-quarters of all households in Newark rent rather than own their homes.

Vizcarrondo reminded Newark residents today that residents who own dogs must purchase or renew licenses for them, and that applications for licenses are available in Room B-17, at City Hall, Mondays through Fridays, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Applicants for dog licenses must present the dog or dogs’ certificates of vaccination when they apply for the license. The fee for dog licenses is $11.20. Last year, the City issued 799 dog licenses.

Mayor Cory A. Booker and Director of Neighborhood and Recreational Services Melvin L. Waldrop announced today that the City of Newark is holding the Second Annual “Director’s Cup Holiday Classic” basketball tournament for children aged 12 and under, with nine teams competing in round robin action starting on Sunday, December 27, and continuing on Tuesday, December 29, and Wednesday, December 30, culminating with the championship rounds and consolation game on Thursday, December 31. The games will take place at the John F. Kennedy Recreation Center which is located at 211 West Kinney Street, with the entrance on Howard Street. The schedule of game times is attached.

Department of Child and Family Well-Being clinic services, inspections, transportation for seniors, and home-delivered meal services will be closed on both Friday, December 25, and on Monday, December 28. All scheduled medical appointments at the Department’s clinic have already been re-scheduled. The Department will continue to provide meals to children through its Child Care Food program, through its contracted vendor, but the department will not answer any inquiries about that program on Friday or Monday.

Mayor Cory A. Booker, Newark Corporation Counsel Julien X. Neals and Acting Municipal Court Presiding Judge Richard E.A. Nunes announced today that 10 Ivy Hill Middle School students served as prosecutors and defense attorneys during a mock trial held in Newark Municipal Court on Thursday, December 17, 2009.
The trial was developed in a partnership with the Newark-based Law Firm of McCarter & English, LLP and Citizen Schools New Jersey which is part of a national non-profit network of out-of-school learning programs which are working in partnership with the New Jersey After-3 network. Under this partnership, the Ivy Hill students develop their writing, public speaking, and critical thinking skills by litigating a legal case.

The tournament is FREE and open to the public. The tourney will be held on the outdoor courts, and rain date for the event is Saturday, July 25.
