From the creation of the Newark Council on Family Success, to the approval of a Children's Bill of Righs, the city of Newark is committed to improving the quality of life for children and families in Newark.
With faces full of happiness and hope, 16 well-deserving students from Newark’s North Ward were rewarded for their hard work with a scholarship check from the North Ward Scholarship Fund. The checks were presented by Councilman Anibal Ramos Jr. in a ceremony at Newark’s City Hall last week, and attended by the students, their parents and teachers, and other members of the Newark Municipal Council.
The Brick City Scholarship Fund - thanks to the generosity of One Newark Center, the City of Newark and Municipal Council - is accepting applications from Newark high school seniors graduating June, 2010. The two recipients will each be awarded $20,000 in four $5000 installments, one for each academic year, to be used toward college tuition, books and transportation.

June 25, 2009 - Councilman Amador Recognizes Nearly 300 of Newark's Best Students
Earlier this week, Newark Councilman Augusto Amador continued his tradition of presenting the “Best of the Best” Award to nearly 300 students from public and private schools in the East Ward. The annual event was held at the Mediterranean Manor in the Ironbound, and attended by both the award recipients and their parents and teachers.

June 19, 2009 - Councilman James Hosts 2nd Annual Youth Empowerment Conference
Emphasizing the theme of “A Child Shall Lead,” South Ward Councilman Oscar S. James II last week hosted his 2nd annual Youth Empowerment Workshop, featuring a dynamic group of speakers that simultaneously engaged, encouraged and inspired a group of more than 100 high school students from the South Ward. The students—who currently attend University, Weequahic and Malcolm X. Shabazz High Schools—responded enthusiastically to the workshop sessions.
Continuing with the success of last year’s young women’s conference, South Ward Councilman Oscar S. James II is hosting the 2nd Annual Youth Empowerment Conference on Friday, June 5, 2009 at 8:30 a.m. This year’s conference is open to young women and men from University, Weequahic and Shabazz high schools in Newark, and will feature workshops geared toward offering students encouragement and inspiration on how to achieve their dreams and goals.
The mission of the Department of Health and Human Services is to provide and advocate for comprehensive health care, social and environmental services to citizens and other consumers so they can attain an optimal level of health and well being.
“Our city exists because of its river,” said Mayor Booker. “It is the reason that people came to this place: Native Americans, European Puritans, American Industrialists, and the Great Migration of African-Americans. But for too long Newarkers have been alienated and blocked off from their riverfront. My administration is dedicated to bringing Newark and Newarkers back to the water.”
August 23 - "School Bus Express" Immunization Program
The program starts Monday, August 23, 2010, and runs through Saturday, September 18, 2010. Hours are: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.; Thursday 8:30 a.m. – 7 p.m.; and Saturday 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Services are being offered at the Department of Child and Family Well-Being, 110 William Street, Newark. The clinic will be closed on the Labor Day Holiday and any scheduled furlough days.
The City of Newark, The Kresge Foundation and the Newark Partnership for Lead Safe Children held a ribbon-cutting ceremony today to celebrate the opening of the city’s first “lead safe house” in the West Ward. An increased demand for relocation resources and lead safe housing prompted Mayor Booker to seek funding to increase lead safe housing opportunities across all ofNewark’s neighborhoods. In addition to the new West Ward lead safe house, the city has two houses with a total of seven units, located in the South Ward, designated as lead safe homes where families relocate during remediation of lead at their homes.
