March 02, 2012 - MAYOR BOOKER SPURS NEWARK ECONOMIC GROWTH BY LAUNCHING NEWARK JOBS CONNECT

MAYOR BOOKER SPURS NEWARK ECONOMIC GROWTH
BY LAUNCHING NEWARK JOBS CONNECT
Powered by TweetMyJobs, the Technology Incorporates
Mobile and Social Media to Drive Employment Solutions

Newark, NJ – March 2, 2012 – Mayor Cory A. Booker and TweetMyJobs Chairman and CEO Robin D. Richards announced today that the City, NewarkWorks, Brick City Development Corporation, and TweetMyJobs are partnering to launch Newark Jobs Connect (www.Newark.TweetMyJobs.com), an initiative to help match Newark job-seekers with employers, making use of mobile and social media to connect residents with the more than 35,000 jobs available across the digital landscape.

“By using Newark Jobs Connect, the City of Newark is providing local employers of all sizes with no-cost access to the same cutting-edge recruitment tools that the Fortune 500 are using today,” said Mayor Booker. “Residents of Newark will directly benefit by hearing about available jobs before anyone else and Newark employers will be able to reach qualified, local candidates fast and first.”

“Job creation starts locally and Mayor Booker is leading the charge to help Newark citizens get back to work whether they’re in need of entry level jobs or seeking C-Suite positions. His pro-active approach, desire to adopt the latest recruitment technology and his foresight in leveraging mobile and social media is highly commendable,” said Mr. Richards.

“In Newark’s Groundbreaking Year, dozens of construction projects are under way, representing more than $800 million in new development and over 2 million square feet of new or renovated space. This investment will produce over 1,000 units of housing and create over 2,500 construction jobs and 2,500 permanent jobs. In the face of a global downturn, Mayor Booker has led the City of Newark into the biggest economic boom the city has seen in decades.  Newark Jobs Connect will help us link Newarkers to these permanent job opportunities,” said Deputy Mayor for Economic and Housing Development Adam Zipkin.

This technology is revolutionizing recruitment by delivering to job seekers relevant job listings instantly, directly and via whatever medium they prefer – be it Facebook, Twitter, email or mobile – and taking advantage of the social graph to enable job referrals and introductions. Employers using the platform gain the opportunity, at no cost, to recruit socially, thereby reaping the competitive advantage of reaching more qualified candidates faster.

“Newark Jobs Connect will give us a variety of communication channels, including mobile devices, to help us reach a broader range of job seekers directly. It is critical for us to bridge the digital divide and match those job seekers with open positions in our city. The Platform allows us to do just that,” said Newark Workforce Investment Board Executive Director Nelida Valentin.

In addition, Newark Jobs Connect will deliver robust analytics to city officials. This data will provide government leaders with hyper-local insights that can help steer key strategic decisions to foster future job growth and enhance relations among the government, employers and citizens.

Since taking office in July 2006, the Booker administration has made meaningful employment for Newark residents a high priority, with creative and innovative approaches to doing so. These have included the creation of NewarkWorks, a one-stop employment center that offers job counseling, on-line searches, access to educational and vocational programs, and partnerships with employers and public and private sector organizations. Other initiatives have included job fairs, youth internship and mentoring programs, efforts to ensure that employers in Newark provide jobs to residents, and the creation of Family Success Centers and Fatherhood Success Centers to help residents with their job search, interview, and workplace skills. The Mayor has also set a high priority on employment for returning veterans with his support of the GI Go Fund and its programs, as well as breaking cycles of unemployment, poverty, and recidivism by creating and supporting ex-prisoners with re-entry programs to help them gain jobs, find housing and medical care, and receive counseling.

About the City of Newark, New Jersey
Newark, commonly referred to as Brick City, is the third oldest city in the United States and the largest in New Jersey, with a population of more than 280,000 people. Newark sits on one of the nation’s largest transportation super-structures including an international airport, major commuter and freight rail lines, major highway intersections and the busiest seaport on the east coast.

With a new Administration as of July 2006, Newark continues to see signs of a strong revival. Its population showed growth in the most recent census. Its six major colleges and universities are further expanding their presence. The rate of production of affordable housing has doubled, and new businesses are moving in.
