CITY OF NEWARK REMINDS RESIDENTS THAT CITY HALL WILL BE CLOSED
AND ALL NON-EMERGENCY CITY SERVICES ARE SUSPENDED
ON MONDAY, JANUARY 16, IN OBSERVANCE OF REV. DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. HOLIDAY
Street-sweeping, garbage and recycling collection scheduled
for Monday, January 16 will be moved to Thursday, January 19;
Municipal Court and Child and Family Well-Being Services also suspended
Newark, NJ - January 11, 2012 - Mayor Cory A. Booker and the Newark Municipal Council reminded residents today that City Hall will be closed and all non-emergency Newark municipal services will be suspended on Monday, January 16, for the observance of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. All non-uniformed city services and offices will be closed that day. Police, fire, and other uniformed emergency services will be unaffected.
“Our dedicated sanitation workers are working to ensure that Newark residents have their garbage removed with minimum inconvenience around this important holiday. I urge our residents to support this effort by sorting and putting out their trash on time. Recycling and street-sweeping will resume as normally scheduled on Tuesday, January 17,” said Mayor Booker. “I urge residents to put out their trash and recyclable material appropriately and as scheduled.”
Trash pick-ups, including recycling, that would normally occur on Monday, January 16, will take place Thursday, January 19. Therefore, residents should not put out their garbage on January 15, as doing so may result in a fine. On Thursday, January 19, residents must place their refuse at their curbs by 6 a.m. Residents whose trash is collected by a private contractor will not be affected by the holiday schedule.
The Department of Child and Family Well-Being’s inspection services, transportation for seniors, and health clinic will not operate on Monday, January 16. In addition, the Bureau of Vital Statistics will be closed. Residents will not be able to apply for permits, birth certificates, name-change certificates, marriage licenses, nor pay water or tax bills at City Hall.
The Municipal Court will also be suspended that day. However, a judge will be available to preside over bail hearings for defendants in custody. Residents can make payments on parking and traffic tickets through the website
www.njmcdirect.com. To utilize this website, residents will need their summons number, including the prefix, and the City of Newark’s court code, which is 0714.
Residents with questions about municipal services or programs, can contact the Newark Non-Emergency Call Center at (973) 733-4311 Mondays through Fridays, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

About the City of Newark, New Jersey
Newark, commonly referred to as Brick City, is the third oldest city in the United States and the largest in New Jersey, with a population of more than 280,000 people. Newark sits on one of the nation’s largest transportation super-structures including an international airport, major commuter and freight rail lines, major highway intersections and the busiest seaport on the east coast.
With a new Administration as of July 2006, Newark continues to see signs of a strong revival. Its population showed growth in the most recent census. Its six major colleges and universities are further expanding their presence. The rate of production of affordable housing has doubled, and new businesses are moving in. There is still much work to be done but Newark is on its way to achieving its mission: to set a national standard for urban transformation.
