RICE CHALLENGES COMMUNITY TO ‘MAN-UP’ ON SATURDAY

West Ward Collective’s 1st Meeting Since Vernon St. School Tragedy

NEWARK—After the execution-style murders of three young people horrified the West Ward, the whole of the city of Newark and, indeed, the entire nation, West Ward Council Member, Ron

C. Rice called on the men of the West Ward Collective, his civic-based organization to take back their neighborhoods. The “Man Up” meeting will commence on Saturday, September 15, from 12 noon to 3:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart School, 24 Hazelwood Avenue in Newark.

Tomorrow, in conjunction with the West Ward Brother’s Club, the Millions More Movement and The Renaissance Community Development Corporation, The West Ward Collective will kick-off their initial community reclamation effort. “I challenge everyone: the media, the politicians, including myself and especially the people of the community to give more than lip service to the tragedies of innocent lives lost in Newark. The cameras were rolling to tell the story of a city’s demise, now let’s see who shows up to bear witness and contribute to its redemption,” Rice said.

At 10:00 a.m. Prior to the “Man UP” meeting Council Member Rice will join with the South Orange Avenue Merchants Association for a Unity March from South Orange Avenue to Vailsburg Park. The purpose of the walk is to bring awareness and foster merchant participation in the Collective.
