Newark visit is one stop on 40-city tour; goal is to kick start careers through education, a component of the Career Stimulus Package by eLearners.com
NEWARK, N.J. - July 20, 2009- Council President Mildred Crump is doing everything in her power to transform and kick start careers through education. The Empowerment Tour, which is part of the Career Stimulus Package by eLearners.com, came to Newark City Hall today with the goal of helping adult Americans overcome the barriers of time, money, and confidence in attaining a college degree. Council President Crump was joined by Mayor Cory Booker in welcoming the tour to Newark .
The tour is traveling by RV to 40 U.S. cities across the country from Denver , Colorado to Los Angeles , California , in an effort to educate, empower, and employ Americans. At each stop, the tour sponsors motivational speakers, career clothing drives, and free career coaching sessions with nationally renowned career experts.
“The point is to promote professional empowerment through education. We want Newarkers and all Americans to gain the knowledge needed to get out there and get the jobs they want,” said Crump. “The Empowerment Tour provides individuals with the knowledge they need in order to reach their full potential as students and ultimately as professionals,” she added.
The Empowerment RV Tour will also award more than 100 full-tuition scholarships for accredited online colleges and universities, totaling more than $4 million. Those who receive scholarships will also receive one week of job shadowing with a partnering company in order for adults to learn more about a particular profession as well as network. Education stations at each tour stop allow eligible adults to apply for these scholarships on site, and opportunities for people to donate old suits and other interview clothing to adults in need. Companies participating in job shadowing for selected scholarship recipients include
CareerBuilder.com, EducationDynamics, ZipReality, and more. Among the universities offering these scholarship opportunities are Capella University and Everest University Online.
“I am proud to sponsor this event. Not only do our citizens benefit from such invaluable knowledge, but the partnerships that are formed between the universities, companies, and students will be invaluable throughout the years to come,” Crump said.
