Statement from Newark Municipal Council President,

Mildred C. Crump:

“The case of the Jenna 6 is a stark reminder that the struggle for equality and justice requires a diligence that must never wane. Be it Crispus Attucks, Frederick Douglas, Sojourner Truth, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King and the countless others who have been sacrificed on the alter of freedom, the lesson taught to us throughout history is that Freedom isn’t free; it has been paid for with the blood of those who came before us.

“We on the Newark Municipal Council stand in support of those six young men in Louisiana and Genarlo Wilson in Georgia and anyone who is persecuted because of their race or ethnic background, because we must never forget. We must continue the fight. We must honor the blood of our forefathers by righting this terrible wrong and fighting injustice everywhere.”

—Mildred C. Crump
