Newark Municipal Council Demands Apology from Sports Network, ESPN and Hockey Analyst Newark—Last Friday, ESPN hockey analyst Barry Melrose, said of the NJ Devils and their new home in Newark, "…Beautiful new arena but don't go there if you have a wallet on you. Its beautiful on the inside but the area around it is horrible."

The Newark Municipal Council demands an apology from ESPN and Barry Melrose in particular. Municipal Council President, Mildred Crump spoke on behalf of the Council and the citizens of Newark in addressing this issue:

“ESPN analyst, Barry Melrose’s, comments were thoughtless, ignorant and steeped with the sort of invective and insinuation that is inexcusably offensive. It is obvious that Mr. Melrose has not been to Newark or visited the neighborhood and people he so glibly ridiculed because nothing could be further from the truth. I am demanding an apology from Barry Melrose and ESPN and invite them to Newark so that they may witness, and enjoy for themselves, Newark’s renaissance.”
