NEWARK MUNICIPAL COUNCIL PRESIDENT MILDRED C. CRUMP SECURES TICKETS TO NJ DEVILS GAME FOR NEWARK STUDENTS
Donation was made possible by the Tommy Hilfiger Corporate Foundation; 50 students from Newark Tech High School will attend game
October 27, 2009 (Newark) – Council President Mildred C. Crump today announced that she will be attending tomorrow’s New Jersey Devils home game at the Prudential Center Arena with 50 special guests—students from Newark Tech High School, beneficiaries of a generous donation made possible by the Tommy Hilfiger Corporate Foundation. In addition to watching an exciting NHL game, the students will be a part of the game dedicated to raising funds for UNICEF, the world’s largest organization dedicated to the reduction of child mortality.
“I’m so excited to attend the game with these special students, who were chosen by their teachers to take advantage of this special opportunity,” says Council President Crump. “As a former educator, I know the importance of providing special privileges to students as a way of rewarding past successes and encouraging future achievement, and I am grateful to the Tommy Hilfiger Corporate Foundation for their donation. Although I’m not a big sports fan, I’m always interested in new experiences, and I’m glad to be able to share this experience with these students,” she added.
Tomorrow night’s game will benefit UNICEF by raising funds to help, among others, victims of the recent natural disasters in the Asia Pacific region. A percentage of ticket sales will be donated to Trick-or-Treat UNICEF. Timed to coincide with Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, concourse stands at the Prudential Center will feature UNICEF collateral and information about how to participate in this year’s Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF campaign. Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF is one of the longest running youth volunteer movements in America . The iconic orange collection boxes and pins will be delivered to fans and the NJ Devil mascot will distribute UNICEF t-shirts during the game to further raise awareness.
The night will also include an autographed “Mystery Puck” sale in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF boxes. Every puck is guaranteed to be signed by a Devils player or coach and will be individually wrapped so the identity remains a surprise until after purchase. Pucks are available on the main concourse near Verizon Tower for $25 each with net proceeds to benefit UNICEF.
“Giving the students from my high school this chance to attend a hockey game is a rare opportunity,” says Baruti Kafele, principal at Newark Tech. “Particularly in Newark , where the students are not typically exposed to the sport of hockey, I’m glad that Council President Crump is making this opportunity available. I’m proud of all my students, and this will go a long way toward inspiring them to continued success, and encouraging them to try new experiences in their lives,” he added.
